This season the high street is awash with sequins, leather, studs and denim I took my cue for Fall for Fashion, rather obviously, from rock n roll. For Tuesday night’s show, I looked to my teen icons- Debbie Harry, Courtney Love, Siouxsie Sioux- for inspiration. Women in music have always pushed the boundaries of fashion, even the boundaries of good taste.
They tend to break the sartorial rules and do things we are told not to do- wearing laddered tights, fishnets, leather, leopard print, too much black, ripped denim, provocative slogans, clothes that are too tight, too short. And somehow it works.
Often they tend to mix up feminine garments- pretty dresses, sequins, lace, killer heels- with masculine elements- tailoring, leather, denim, biker boots- and this often makes what should be a really bad, cheap-looking outfit really cool, even if in a slightly trashy way.
Layering is also key to this look, often in black and dark colours, so texture is essential to add interest. Look for sequins, studs, fringing, beading, laddered and open knits and lace, with a base of denim and leather.

On the high-street, Mango and Firetrap are doing this look particularly well. Check out Oasis for their gorgeous black sequin dress and tutu dress with embellished waistband, Pepe for their studded biker jacket and bleached skinny jeans and Urban Outfitters for their retro band t-shirts and cobweb tights.
Oxfam Vintage is a treasure trove for aspiring Joan Jetts with a huge amount of leopard print, embellishment, and jackets with major shoulders. I found the best t-shirt ever here- a black t with fringed leather epaulettes.

If this all sounds a bit harsh and intimidating for you, there is a softer side to this look- be inspired by 60’s icons Marianne Faithful and Patti Boyd and go for a folksy, hippy look.
Replace black leather with earthy shades of suede and sheepskin, add beautiful printed silks, rich tapestries, embroidery, faux fur, distressed denim and chunky, textured knits. Layer garments in neutral tones accented with rich shades of burgundy and green (Belt layers to avoid looking too bulky)
Yoke have some gorgeous pieces to help you achieve this look- textured knitwear, intricate embroidery and delicate faded prints.

Wednesday night’s show ‘Deadly Designer’ showcased grown-up, elegant looks. In total contrast to the punk and grunge looks that are so prevalent this season, there is also a real 1940’s look, which references not just the
This look relies heavily on layering tailored garments, in different weights and colours, adding checks and plaids for interest.
